Academic Editing

Academic Editing

The editing of academic papers such as a thesis or articles for publication in academic or professional journals, is a very different type of work than editing fiction. While the manuscripts may be shorter than the average novella, the structure and style are far more complex. After working within a price per word framework for some time, it’s become clear to me that I need to make a change in my pricing structure for Academic Editing and have moved to a fixed price per hour.

I’ve researched industry and freelance editors’ rates for both general editorial services and academic specific services; by and large, they are hourly rates ranging from $30 to $80 per hour. Now, I’d like to be recompensed for my time but don’t think that an exorbitant fee is right, necessary, or something I could live with.

My fee for editing academic manuscripts is $25.00/hour. I will offer as realistic an estimate as I possibly can when receiving a client’s manuscript, supporting documents and style guide for the intended publication, which vary widely and wildly from journal to journal. I will track billable hours as carefully as humanly possible and present the time sheet to clients along with the final invoice.
